In skincare, the porcelain skin look is widely coveted! It requires the skin to be smooth, the complexion free of blemishes, and to carry an even tone! It’s a highly sought-after beauty standard that’s associated with a youthful, healthy appearance. As we all know, consumers pay an average of 3 to 4 hundred a year on skincare products! Many of which are topical and used on the outside! But where does skincare start?
In order for a product to have an effect on our skin, there are many layers to traverse! Lotions can eliminate the “dry skin” look, and some may even make it feel softer and younger, but for how long? You have to keep applying topicals daily, sometimes several times a day, to get results! This leads to a lot of wasted time and money for little results!
Skin Anatomy

Now, let us take a look at the anatomy of our skin and see if it is feasible for topical products to have any long-lasting effect!
As you can see, the skin is a complex organ made up of several layers. Skincare is the key to keeping it healthy!
1. Epidermis:
- The outermost layer of the skin
- Provides a waterproof barrier and protects against external factors
- Subdivided into five sublayers: stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum basale
2. Dermis:
- The middle layer of the skin
- This is where the blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, and sweat glands are located
- It is divided into two other layers: the papillary dermis and the reticular dermis
3. Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Layer): The innermost layer of the skin, composed of fat cells and connective tissue, provides insulation and cushioning.
It’s important to note that the thickness and composition of these layers can vary depending on the location on the body. For example, the skin on the palms and soles is thicker and has an additional layer called the stratum lucidum. As we get older, the skin tends to get thinner! So ultimately, using proper skincare, protecting it, and keeping it healthy when one is young is a goal many should strive for!
Nutrients your Skin requires
Nutrients that are essential for smooth skin include vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, zinc, omega-3s, selenium, and protein.
Vitamin A
- Helps produce collagen and keratin, which make up most skin cells
- Helps keep skin strong
Vitamin C
- An antioxidant that helps produce collagen
- Helps prevent melanin-producing enzymes from overreacting to UV damage
Vitamin D
- Helps regulate skin cell growth and repair
- Helps to prevent dry skin and eczema
Vitamin E
- An antioxidant that prevents damage from oxidation and free radicals
- Helps prevent UV damage
Zinc helps regulate oil production, reduce inflammation, and support the skin’s natural defenses against environmental damage.
Omega-3s
- Incorporated into skin membranes, providing flexibility
Selenium helps antioxidants protect skin from UV rays and helps prevent premature wrinkles.
Protein
- Makes up collagen, keratin, and elastin, which are important for skin, hair, and nails
Now, sure, we can get all the above nutrients just from a well-balanced diet. Avoid the sun, eat a sensible diet with all the nutrients listed above, and our skin should glow, right? But in reality, how many of us do that? It isn’t until we hit our 40s or 50s and the signs of aging start to appear that we take steps to hold them off!
