Is College Worth It? College, in my experience, was undoubtedly good. I always loved learning new things and doing research and writing. But the aftereffects I could have definitely lived without! Because I came from a poorer family, I had to rely on grants and later on student loans. The cost of my preferred vocation was high; I loved the medical field, but due to expenses, I had to switch majors and sometimes schools to afford it.
In the end, most of the knowledge I acquired proved to be useful. I had to leave college when my mother was diagnosed with cancer and moved back home to take care of her. During this time, I was inspired by the care that the caregivers provided. Although I couldn’t be a nurse or a physician’s assistant, I realized that I could become a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) and continue my passion for helping others. The total cost for the STNA training course was less than what I was paying for a semester in college. So even though my career path changed, the knowledge I had obtained during my college years helped me breeze through the STNA classes.
Although being a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) may not offer the same income potential as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) or a Physician Assistant (P.A.), it provided me with something I believe is even more valuable. I learned history from those who experienced it firsthand. I gained knowledge of crafts from individuals who have practiced them their entire lives. I discovered traditional survival skills that are increasingly lacking in today’s world. The elderly in the United States represent one of our most overlooked resources!

Is College Worth It?
OK… let’s review this…
45 percent of students “did not demonstrate any significant improvement in learning” over the first two years of college. Close to 40 percent didn’t learn anything at all over all four years.
Clearly, college is not making People Smarter.
Many Students Never Really Studied, with 35 percent reporting less than 5 hours a week in study time.
2.67 hours a day is all that is reported. Twice that time in shopping, eating, and partying.
There is a consistent increase in adult illiteracy. Most college graduates score below average in cognitive tasks, such as calculating grocery costs.
College Grads in the US test at or below high school kids in several other Countries.
Top Universities are declining in their intellectual discipline, exactitude, and scholarly rigor
College classes seem to be getting less rigorous, yet the average college GPA remains above 3.0. Grade inflation is highest at private schools, and while more students are failing, it appears that nobody actually fails.
It’s unacceptable that billions in taxpayer dollars are being funneled to these institutions. If this were a private business, there would undoubtedly be fraud indictments. This must be addressed!
The job market for recent college graduates in 2025 is considered “one of the most challenging in the last decade, aside from the pandemic period,” according to an economist from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. While overall employment rates have declined, certain fields continue to experience strong demand. For example, nursing, culinary arts, agriculture, criminal justice, and education are in high demand, even though they are not among the most common majors. Although many recent graduates are securing jobs, the job market is seeing a significant slowdown in hiring and increased competition, likely due to economic uncertainty and the growing influence of AI.
So what is the answer?
Become your own boss! While it may not involve thousands of dollars in tuition fees, the education you will gain access to has a proven track record of helping students earn hundreds to thousands of dollars per week.
